How to Knit a Baby Blanket Pt 1

THE BULK OF THE INSTRUCTION FOR THIS BLANKET IS IN PART 2. TURN UP VOLUME IF TOO LOW!!! This video details the materials you’ll need and some preliminaries in case you have no idea how to knit. Even if you’re an advanced knitter you’ll want to learn THIS cast on method because it’s super fast and cuts your cast on time in half! This seriously comes in handy for large projects! I teach the Simple Cast On method in detail here but just in case you need a little extra clarification here’s another link: www.youtube.com You’ll need to know how to knit and how to purl. If you don’t, here are some vids because I don’t go over that in this video: * The knit stitch: www.youtube.com * The purl stitch: www.youtube.com
Video Rating: 4 / 5
Have you ever thought about getting paid for your work? Click on the book below and find out how YOU can do it!
* The Knit Stitch: www.youtube.com * Embroidery Tutorial: this’ll show you how to create any shape, letter or design (it’s actually 2 techniques in 1 video the chain stitch and the wrap stitch) You will need a crochet hook and an embroidery needle for this tutorial. You can find all these items at Michaels. Everything for this baby blanket can be bought at Michaels or a similar craft store in your area: www.youtube.com I used this embroidery technique as well (the backstitch) because I did not have a crochet hook at the time and needed something to give some extra bulk so my design would have that NY hat look. If you have a crochet hook DON’T watch this video, this is just if you’re roughing like I was with only an embroidery needle lol! You’ll still need to watch the embroidery video above as well though for the wrapping technique: www.youtube.com * Stockinette Stich! I sub to her (iknitwithcatfur), go ahead and sub as well. She’s slow on the comment reply bit but her vids are good. She gives tutorials on some fantastic patterns for real: www.youtube.com * Seed Stitch! (I sub to her as well. Go ahead and sub to her! I’m not getting paid for all these shout outs, I genuinely like these people
Honestly KnittingTipsbyJudy is one of if not THE best teachers on Youtube for knitting. She explains things in a fantastically simple way and the results are beautiful. She’s a legit celebrity knitter and has knitted for movies like “Grinch” with Jim Carey and “Waterworld” with …

I appreciate the information that you shared…Here are some suggestions: your voice was somewhat garbled not clear, listen to it before releasing the video. Also try to have your camera over your shoulder so that we are looking at your knitting the same way in which you are looking at it. Thanks!

@redsxncubs23 Ten inches should be fine. Use a size 10 pair, that’s what I used.
August 10th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
how long were the needles you used to make the example baby blanket? mine are 10 inches long but I think it’s too short =S
August 10th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
@Weewinkle7 wait but won’t it just get longer? doesn’t the needle length determine how wide the blanket will be? i use 10 1/2 (6.5mm) needles and they aren’t long enough to make a blanket I think…..what size needles did you use?
August 10th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
@Trixei85 uh uh, no. The blanket length is determined by how long you knit for. The longer you knit (many days and weeks, even months) the longer your blanket gets because your knitting stacks many rows on top of each other which makes the blanket longer. Once you start knitting you’ll get the idea.
August 10th, 2010 at 5:47 pm
with the needle, however long the needle is is that how long the blanket will be? thanks
August 10th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
@Weewinkle7 haha thank u so much!
for the help!
August 10th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

August 10th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
@twilightbabyz92 Are you just kissing up to me so I’ll answer your question???? JK No yes you can make a simple garter stitch blanket. It’s much easier too.
August 10th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
okay have a comment and a question. comment: your videos are amazing!!!!!! question: is it possible just to make a garter stitch blanket?
August 10th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
all you do is put each skein into a container and set them on the floor. I use ice crean containers.
August 10th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
@jonnycortes If you are consistent but average about 2 weeks. A week if you’re fast and a month to 2 months if you’re a super slow poke like me and keep stopping. But for real, I knit half way on my second baby blanket in 2 days (really 5- 7 hours of knitting cuz I only knit like 3 hours straight each day). My point is, if I’d pick the thing up more often I’d be done in about a week
!

how long does it take to knit a baby blanket
August 10th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Well, I went to Michael’s, JoAnn’s and back to Walmart and they DID have the yarn with the sheen…I didn’t see the Red Hearts shiny one, bu they have another brand called Caron Simply Soft and they have quite a few colors with soft sheen… just update for anyone interested…
August 10th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
@nanidiamond Red Heart Super Saver yarn. You can get it at Michaels or any other crafts store. I’ve never seen this shiny variety in Walmart, they tend to carry mostly the cottony Red Hearts but check still!
August 10th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
what brand and type of thread is that? I like how shiny/shimmery the green is…(sorry, I can’t hear what you’re saying since don’t have volume working )…
August 10th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
You don’t have 2 use the size ten — You can use bigger and it’ll knit up faster! (or smaller if you want, but that will take longer to knit) But if you use bigger the blanket will be lacier and probably less warm for baby so you decide what you want. I just tell you size ten cuz that’s what I used, in case you want to replicate my blanket. But the size 10 is just what I got off the internet when I found the pattern. I actually changed the pattern but kept the size the same.
August 10th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
Why is it important to use a size 10?
August 10th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
This is really hard to follow from this angle. I wish you had a video from the opposite angle.
August 11th, 2010 at 12:33 am
LOL! You’ll get the hang of it!
August 11th, 2010 at 1:08 am

August 11th, 2010 at 1:25 am
beautiful blanket! is 127 stitches the same as the green blanket? also how do you write the name on the blanket???…ps your face is beautiful!
August 11th, 2010 at 1:52 am
You only knit and purl each stitch on the edges. On the body of the blanket you knit 1 entire row (127 stitches all the way across) then purl 1 entire row to create the stockinette stitch. See Pt. 2 for links to vids on how to do the seed and stockinette stitch. Thanks for watching!
August 11th, 2010 at 2:38 am
this is reaI heIpfuI! i’m stiII a bit confused (i’m a beginner), do you knit and purI the whoIe thing or just the edges?

Its good for practicing, but I personally feel that its super scratchy.
August 11th, 2010 at 8:31 am
@xToXicBeAutYx You’re very welome!
August 11th, 2010 at 9:04 am
I’m going to try this out!! Thank you so much!! =]
August 11th, 2010 at 9:43 am
It could, but using larger needles would mean less stitches and a chunkier yarn. Using larger needles would cause you to change the directions in order to achieve the same size blanket. Therefore using the same directions and stitches with 17 would make a much larger…and stretchier blanket.
August 11th, 2010 at 10:32 am
hey you probably said this in your vid and i missed it, but what color and brand yarn did you use. Im in a group called Blankets for Babies at my school and I would love to make a blanket using your patter. It’s simple, but looks nice.
August 11th, 2010 at 11:23 am
Your video was very helpful! Just to get this straight, can you reaffirm I heard correctly?
Cast on 127 stitches.
Knit, pearl every other stitch for the 1st 10 rows.
Then, KPKPK first and last 5 stitches, but inbetween I do a full row of knitting, and the next row Purling, etc.
Do this until you want to add that indent, and then I don’t KPKPK the first and last 5 stitches, but I just knit ALL of those rows?
Continue as normal with first and last 5 stitches KPKPK, and every other row K,P.
August 11th, 2010 at 12:02 pm

You change hands and start knitting the same way you did in the beginning. See links in the sidebar i.e. the “knit stitch” for clarification.
August 11th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
